India Welcomes Trump–Putin Alaska Summit, Hopes for Peace in Ukraine

In a significant diplomatic development, U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are set to meet in Alaska on August 15, 2025, marking their first formal summit since 2021. The high-stakes talks aim to explore possible steps toward ending the ongoing war in Ukraine, now in its third year.

The White House has indicated that President Trump is open to discussing a range of proposals, including a controversial idea of “territorial adjustments” between Russia and Ukraine as part of a potential ceasefire. However, this suggestion has met strong resistance from Kyiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that Ukraine’s constitution prohibits ceding territory and warned that decisions made without Ukraine’s consent would be “dead decisions.”

European leaders have also expressed firm opposition to any peace plan that redraws borders by force, calling instead for a process that fully involves Ukraine and respects its sovereignty. Analysts caution that any compromise that legitimizes territorial gains through military action could set a dangerous precedent for future conflicts.

Amid these tensions, India has welcomed the planned summit, with the Ministry of External Affairs describing it as a “positive step” that holds the promise of opening new prospects for peace. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted that dialogue between major powers is essential to de-escalating the crisis and reducing global instability.

While India is not a direct participant in the Alaska talks, its endorsement reflects New Delhi’s long-standing call for diplomacy and peaceful resolution. For India, stability in the region is not only a matter of global security but also linked to economic and energy concerns.
